The origins of the name "Ventoux" date back to the 1st or 2nd century AD. "Ventoux" comes from "Vintur", a god whom local inhabitants honoured once a year on the mountain top.
The Ventoux vineyards go back to 30 B.C., and are the oldest in France.
The wines of Ventoux have had many admirers through the centuries, including kings of France and the Popes during their time in Avignon.
More recently, the "Giant of Provence" and the Route Départementale 970, a leg on the Tour de France, have also made a lasting impression.
The world's greatest cyclists (Poulidor, Merckx, Virenque, etc.) have confronted the mythical Mont Ventoux – sometimes at the cost of their life, as was the case for Tom Simpson of the UK.
This is no ordinary mountain. It is one of the most admired and most beautiful, as well as most feared and difficult mountains in France!
The Ventoux winegrowers are deeply rooted in their region's long history, and learned long ago how to cope with their uneven, difficult land. In this part of the world, you have not only to know and like your profession, but be passionately involved with it.
